Welcome, Mac and Cheesecake! A Sweet Surprise on the Homestead
You can plan all you want on a homestead, but our animals almost always have the final say on the schedule. We love the rhythm of the seasons and the quiet predictability of farm life, but every now and then, we get a beautiful reminder that nature has its own timeline.
We thought we still had a couple more weeks to prepare for our goat, Oreo, to give birth. We had the birthing stall ready, but we weren't on high alert just yet.
Then came Wednesday morning.
I was walking out to the goat shelter for the regular morning feeding, same as any other day. But as I got closer, I knew something was different. It was quiet—a little too quiet. When I peeked into the shelter, I stopped right in my tracks.
There, nestled in the hay, was Oreo... and she wasn't alone.
She had two tiny, beautiful babies lying beside her. They were still wet, and she was dutifully cleaning them off, "talking" to them in that soft, low way only mamas do. She had delivered them all on her own, safe and sound, right there in the shelter. It was one of those moments that just makes your heart swell.
After giving them a few moments to bond, we went in to check on everyone. We have a healthy little buckling (a boy) and a sweet little doeling (a girl)!
As you know, we have a bit of a favorite food theme with our goat names, so it was only fitting to welcome "Cheesecake" (our precious doeling) and "Mac" (short for Mac & Cheese, our handsome new buckling)!
Oreo is proving to be an absolutely incredible mother. From the moment we found them, she has been so attentive, making sure they are clean, warm, and well-fed. It’s a beautiful thing to see an animal's natural instincts take over so perfectly. She is taking such great care of them, and our hearts are just full watching the new little family.
These little ones are more than just cute new faces on the farm; they're a joyful reminder of why we do what we do. While Mac and Cheesecake will spend the next few months just being adorable, playful kids, this wonderful birth is a huge blessing for our homestead.
Oreo is a fantastic milker, and her rich, nourishing milk is the star ingredient in the goat milk soaps and lotions you love. A happy, healthy mama like Oreo produces the highest quality milk, packed with all those amazing vitamins and minerals. We are so excited to eventually share her amazing milk with you, pouring that same motherly care and farm-fresh goodness right into the products we craft for your family.
For now, we're just soaking in the sweetness of new life and feeling so grateful for this surprise. We'll be sure to share plenty of pictures and "kid-dates" as they start to grow, find their legs, and explore the pasture.
Thank you for being a part of our journey and for supporting a small farm where every animal has a name and a story. Welcome to the world, Mac and Cheesecake!
