A Sweet Surprise in the Pasture: Welcome, Cookies & Cream! 🍪🥛

Life on our little homestead here at Curley's Creek is filled with routines – the morning crow of the rooster, the contented munching of our goats, and, of course, the twice-daily rhythm of milking. But every now and then, the day throws us a beautiful, unexpected curveball, and a couple of afternoons ago was just such a time!

I was in the middle of our afternoon milking session with the girls. Skittles was on the stand, and things were calm as usual. Peach, one of our small Pygmy goat nannies, had been on our "maybe pregnant" watch list, but she hadn't given us any definitive signs that today was the day. Suddenly, she let out a bleat that was decidedly different – a little more urgent, a touch distressed. A quick glance showed some bloody drainage, and just like that, we knew our afternoon was about to get a whole lot more exciting: Peach was in labor!

There's a certain calm that settles over you when you've been through these moments before. Unlike our first couple of goat deliveries, which were a flurry of (let's be honest) slightly panicked energy, this time, everyone knew their roles. I quickly sent our son inside to grab towels and gloves while I finished up with Skittles. Jill, ever the capable goat midwife, headed into the pasture to be with Peach.

Now, Peach is a sweet girl, but she’s also a bit on the skittish side. True to her nature, as Jill approached, she naturally retreated, wanting her own space. Jill patiently followed her as she made her way behind the goat shelter. Then, in a stroke of what turned out to be perfect luck, Peach came around the corner of the shelter that runs right alongside the fence line. It was the ideal spot! We could gently 'corner' her there, with me approaching from one direction and Jill from the other, ensuring we could assist if she needed us.

I guided Skittles off the milking stand and made my way towards the shelter. Just as I reached the corner by the fence, ready to help guide Peach, I heard Jill exclaim from the other side, "Oh my goodness!" And as she walked around the corner, there in her arms was the cutest, tiniest baby goat you ever did see!

He’d made a swift and somewhat stealthy entrance into the world! His markings are a beautiful mix of gray and white, and you know how we love to name our goats after our favorite foods here at Curley's Creek. So, naturally, with that dapper coat, he just had to be named Cookies & Cream. 🍪🥛

After his surprise arrival, we carefully assessed Peach and made sure she was comfortable and tended to. Soon after, we reunited mother and son. It’s always such a precious moment to see them together, and we’re overjoyed to report that both Peach and little Cookies & Cream are doing absolutely fantastic now.

It’s these unexpected moments of new life, the calm teamwork, and the simple joy of welcoming another healthy baby to our homestead that make all the hard work so incredibly worthwhile. We can't wait for you to meet Cookies & Cream properly soon – perhaps he’ll even inspire a new product one day! 😉

Warmly,

The Curley's Creek Family 🐐💖
